The Wise Man's Fear - Patrick Rothfuss ⭐⭐

Thoughts - The Wise Man's Fear (May contain spoilers) This book was sorely disappointing. I adored the first book in the series, "The Name of the Wind" and expected this entry to be just as enchanting. It started out well. In contrast to many popular reviews of this book, I quite enjoy the wizard school setting and all of the characters within it. I also enjoyed the brief departure into Severen, and the assination plot therein.

The book became a slog for me when Rothfuss led the reader out of Severen and into an agonizingly long trek through the forest with a new cast of bland, potboiler characters. This section is too long, and provides very little in terms of plot advancement. I did enjoy the uncanny campfire tale of the boy with the screw in his bellybutton.

The chunk about Felurian was completely unnecessary, and it read like a 17 year old's wet dream. I'm not opposed to sexual content in fiction, many of the books in my collection are considered "smut". However, in this type of book the escapade felt out of place, repetative, and uncomfortable. I did enjoy the encounter with the Cthaeh, but otherwise skimmed through the 70 some pages of this mess.

I decided to cut my losses and DNF shortly after starting the section detailing Kvothe's training with the Adem. Frankly, I found it dull, and began having difficultly finishing even a single page.

Despite this let down, I still enjoy Rothfuss's writing, and hope that he finishes this series and continues to write. While I did not enjoy The Wise Man's Fear, I enjoyed the first book so much that I'm willing to give any additions a fair chance.
